TELLING IDAHO STORIES, ONE BEER AT A TIME

Many a beautiful relationship has blossomed over a few cold ones — or, in the case of Boise Brewing and Carew Co., over a few home brews.

When Collin Rudeen began experimenting by crafting his own beer, Paul Carew was there to serve as a dutiful taste tester. When Collin later kicked off his Kickstarter for what was then called Bogus Brewing, Carew Co. was on board to handle the creative work and packaging (as posted on Oh Beautiful Beer back in 2012).

Five years and one eye-catching downtown brewery space later, Boise Brewing is still cranking out locally focused concoctions. Carew Co. has handled all of Boise Brewing’s branding, designing labels for bottles — and now cans — that reflect Boise Brewing’s hyper-local aesthetic: Roosevelt Red Rye features the iconic Roosevelt Market, Hipcheck IPA is a nod to Treasure Valley Rollergirls, Hard Guy pays homage to the beloved Foothills Trail, and Down Down refers to the Hash House Harriers’ (“a drinking club with a running problem”) chugging anthem.

Each label features hand-drawn typography that’s set slightly off-kilter. It’s a friendly design that reflects Boise Brewing’s community-supported ethos. But don’t think Boise Brewing doesn’t have big-town aspirations: The brewery’s Black Cliffs American Stout has won silver at the Great American Beer Festival two years in a row.
